HTH 1301 - Medical Law and Ethics

Description

Introduces the key principles governing the management of health information management. The study of health information regulations and compliance standards are the focus of this course, to include the release of information and confidentiality of patient information. An overview of the legal frameworks governing health information and ethical decision making are also presented in this course. Other topics include legislative process, the court system, legal vocabulary, record retention guidelines, patient rights/advocacy, advance directives, and informed consent.

Outcomes

  1. Describe the ethical standards involved in the management of health information systems.
  2. Outline proper procedures for transmitting sensitive patient information.
  3. Discuss compliance regulations related to health information management.
  4. Explain the importance of patient rights throughout the continuum of care.
  5. Summarize health care legislation relating to the maintenance and use of health information.
